6 Tips for Virtual Backgrounds in Virtual Meetings
If you can avoid using a virtual background, I’d say to do so. If you have to use one, invest in a proper green screen background and set things up right. Here are 6 tips to make the best use of a virtual background in your virtual meetings.
1. Get The Lighting Right
The wrong lighting can cause shadows and artifacts. This also includes lighting that is behind your green screen that shines through.
2. Size and Position Matter!
If you have your screen angled wrong compared to the camera there are areas that will distract from the effect.
3. Configure Your Meeting Software
Programs like Zoom have a setting where you configure if you are using a green screen. Note that it is important to turn this off when not using a green background. Items in the background might have that color and cause artifacts that distract meeting attendees.
4. Water bottle – don’t make this Clear Mistake
Don’t use a transparent water bottle, or a green one. This also goes for not drinking Mountain Dew. This can also cause distractions that interfere with your communication.
5. No Motion Sickness
Avoid video backgrounds. The movement can also distract from your communications.
6. Keep things Smooth!
Make sure your background is smooth/flat. Major wrinkles or folds can create shadows that also cause artifacts and distractions.
